Cook, Pettis and Douglas - Feather Lane GP 1994

Back

Probably my favorite videos to watch are the ones where we are out play riding. My favorite memories of riding a motorcycle are the times when a bunch of riding buddies got together and hit the trails or gravel pits. I remember some things about this very well, although I can't remember why I didn't go riding with Rodney Cook, Larry Pettis and Bart Douglas. Sometimes not being able to ride works out better, because it gives a person like myself a chance to break out the video recorder. The boys went riding at tiny little gravel pit just off highway 9 beside feather lane...and just down the road from my parent's house. I would drive by the pit almost every day, but I only remember riding in it one time during my whole life. It is now located adjacent to a big housing development, and even back in 1994 there were too many houses close by for me to feel like I feel like a jerk for riding there. So I basically stayed away. However, one afternoon Rodney, Larry and Bart decided to check it out. The biggest thing I remembered about the day was having trouble with the camera batteries and I was barely able to get this footage. Unfortunately, the camera battery died while I was filming Rodney approaching a rather large and tricky jump. If the battery had not died I would have recorded a spectacular step-off in mid-air by Rodney. He was ok, but the crash was truly spectacular. I have said it before, and I am not sure if anyone ever noticed, but for the little amount of riding that Rodney did he sure had some awful wrecks. It is no wonder he decided to hang up his boots early and keep his racing to a minimum. Then there is Larry Pettis. Back when I was in the 7th grade riding an XR200 I remember going to the local gravel pit and literally being in awe of the jumps and hillclimbs. Larry had a few bad accidents that slowed him down, and kept him off the bike for long periods of time and ultimately ended his racing years early....but not before he provided our riding crew some great memories, and as you will see on my youtube channel, so great video moments. Personally, my "Pettis" collection are my favorite videos of all. Bart Douglas didn't ride too much with us. To look at him on the street, you would get the impression that he was an animal and would be one hell of a good rider. Au contraire. The notion that some people just aren't cut out for riding a dirt bike fast would fit Bart to a Tee. Bart had a great sense of humor about it though. While he could bench press three times as much as myself, I could ride a dirt bike about thirty times faster. Rodney and I used to always joke about the smallest jumps at any given track or gravel pit and call them the "Bart Doubles". Quite fitting.
